Support for Sporty Socks

FitFluential has weekly chats on twitter that are really quite informative regarding nutrition, health, fitness, etc. A couple of months ago they were talking about athletic socks and how beneficial they are for runners. I’ve never take an interest in them because I’m thinking okaay socks are socks. whatever.

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been interested in buying some and seeing if they make a difference in my training & running. My boss told me once she started wearing training socks she never went back to regular sock when working out.  When I workout/run now I wear my Hanes pink toed socks or just my cute little colored socks… nothing major or supportive at all.  I purchased Advanced High Performance training socks from Champion at Target. I’m excited to try these out because I have been having some support issues with my arch occasionally and it’s frickin painful! I have an onRamp CrossFit class in a couple of day. this class is three..yes  3 hours long. I’m probably gonna die, but at least my feet will be swagged out. I also plan to start running again with BGR, I stopped because I’ve been coaching, track season is ending in a few weeks. I’ll be able to really tell if there is a difference then.

I went to the gym and wore the socks today, they felt good. I was balling amazingly.. just like Jordan. -_-  :D   Was it because of the sock? haha. These socks claim to

  • Absorb shock b/c of its  zone cushioning
  • provide arch support for ALL day performance
  • wicks moisture fast with Duo Dry Max-specific to Champion
  • & of course provides comfort.

$9.oo for a pack of 4. White socks with trim of green/blue/pink/purple and grey heels + toes. I want eventually make the switch to workout in only fitness socks.

Just like workout specific clothing, these sporty socks aren’t necessary to workout and not having any better not! be your excuse to why you aren’t gettin it in consistently. I do think they are beneficial for individuals who participate in moderate-high intensity && for endurance activities.

So .. yall have any thoughts about sporty socks? A different brand I should buy?

Music While Running? Yay or Nay?!

12/2/12 BGR Morning 4 mile run

12-2-12 BGR Morning 4 mile run w/ my MUSIC!

This Saturday I finally get to do my 5k. I plan on decreasing my time by hopefully 2+ minutes.  Earlier this year, my ipod nano was stolen and I’ve been using my mom’s shuffle when I run ( I use music when I went to the gym too, but I haven’t been in to a gym in months.) I plan on getting an itouch  so I can have access to all the apps and enough storage for all my jams (oh heyyy um… my birthday is in a few weeks soooooo in case you want to get me a gift..an itouch would be AWESOMEEE! :p)

(disclaimer: this is really how me & my moma talk to each other-it’s real love over here)

Last night I was telling my mom she can take her raggedy shuffle back because “don’t nobody want that!…but not until I come back from my 5k because I needs that.” She then went on about how *in her mom voice* “I DON’T listen to music when I’m running or working out. It’s not necessary and that’s what’s wrong with the society today!”  okay mom -__-  but I usually do need it. I need music to get me amped up to run, then to keep me motivated while getting my fit on and also to take my mind off of any pain or just to keep my mind busy. It hasn’t been a safety hazard either because I’m not blasting it && if I am outside I am aware of my surroundings.

I read (or learned in school) that distance runners do not run with music because it is a distraction. Since they are so in tuned with their body, they often do not train with music…interesting, but very plausible. I can workout with out music and it is a different experience, but I usually don’t.

Also, the music that I have in my workout playlist is absolutely ratchet. There is no denying it. If you were to listen to my “keep going” music your face would be like O_O but I’m sure you have some tunes that are suspect too!!

Do you listen to music when working out? Why or why not? Any benefits I’m missing out on while listening to music? If you have some favorite songs to workout to let me know! If I get enough I’ll make a playlist that I’ll share!

Wait…Getting Proper Running Sneaks Really Works? Whaat?!!

Hi Folks!!

I know you’ve heard that if you’re having ankle, knee, hip && even back pains it can be linked to the type of sneakers you wear when you workout, especially when you run. Yes? Okay. Good you’ve heard something along the lines of this too!

Now listen to my testimony. So as you all know, I run about 3 miles twice a week. When I first started running my right knee and whole lower back would be in constant pain for a couple of days. Not horrible, excruciating, life stopping, plan canceling pains, just annoying ugh I should ice and ugh there’s some stairs pain. My senior year in high school I rolled my ankle triple jumping and it has never been right since, but that’s another issue that might be    && probably is related. So I had 2 pairs of “running” sneaks. A Nike && an Adidas pair- both great. Both waay more than 6 month old. I used these sneaks for everything; running. workouts, training my clients, tennis etc- everything. I didn’t have a specific running shoe.

A couple of weeks ago my back was really bothering me more than usually after I did a faster 3 mile the day before, but I still didn’t change anything. The first weekend in July I took a trip to Nordstrom’s Rack. I didn’t go in to buy anything, but I saw some sneakers and decided they were worth a new purchase. I got the Asics Gel-Frantic 6 shoe. I pretty much LOVE them.

When I first went on a run my knee started to hurt during the run, but I figured it was adjusting to the new shoe & wouldn’t last. I was right. After my run my back & knees felt fine. I can tell that they absorb shock different than my other two sneaks. They are comfortable. Stylish and have done wonders for how my body feels. Now I still have my other two pairs of sneaks, but I ONLY use the Asics for running, NOTHING ELSE! By the way, they were a great price $39.00 I believe. Marked down a whole bunch I think more than $40.

I mean, yes I knew that proper sneakers make a difference, but SHEEESH I never realized how MUCH of a difference.

So for all you runners && avid workout-ers. GET NEW SNEAKS about every 300 miles or every few months. You’re body will definitely tell you when you need to get new sneakers. Don’t fight it. Don’t compromise! They don’t have to be hella expensive to get the job done and your body will be so appreciative. Proper alignment & biomechanics are really important to prevent pains!!!!!

But If you have any running sneaker suggestion Please post here! I want to get one more pair of sneaks in the next month.
